At A glance

Frontier had two problems that pull in opposite directions:

  • The first is attraction. The village is making a pitch for attracting families: affordable housing, serviced lots, a K-12 school, registered childcare, fibre internet now available through SaskTel. That requires good photography and a warm, welcoming vibe to capture the specialness of the community.
  • The second is administration. Minutes, bylaws, tax certificates, emergency services. That governance needs structure and findability.

The Village and the neighbouring RM each needed a web presence for their respective audiences, and were able to join forces to fund the launch rather than each building their own websites.

The Challenge

The navigation separates the two jobs into three doors so neither audience has to dig through the other's content:

  • Community: things to do, facilities, business directory, the K-12 school, event calendar (for people who live there)
  • Visitors: things to do, accommodation, local events (for people passing through or considering a move)
  • Administration: council, emergency services, meeting minutes, bylaws, notices (for people doing business with the village)

With a clear "Visit RM Site / Visit Village Site" switch in the header, we can showcase two separate municipal bodies each with its own minutes, bylaws and council, all served by a single build.

The Bill 43 guidance lists "partnering with nearby municipalities to share a regional website" as a way to meet the online posting requirement. Frontier was doing it before it was cool.

The Village and RM content can be managed from the same CMS, and the system is set up for your success: minutes upload as PDFs and automatically file themselves into the correct year, and notices publish to the homepage and the notices page all at once.

If your RM and your village are both looking to meet the new criteria for online posting, it may be beneficial to look at it as one project, rather than two. Shared infrastructure, separate records, reduced cost overall.
